Taking Care of Your Ceramic Coffee Tables

One of the major reasons why people choose to bring ceramic coffee tables or dining tables into their homes is because they are so easy to care for. One of the hardiest materials, ceramic tables look both classy and effortlessly gorgeous, bringing a touch of luxury into your home, without being hard to care for.

Whether you’ve recently got yourself a ceramic table or are looking to get Gainsville’s spectacular Harvey Stone Slab Tables, read through this guide to learn more about how to care for your ceramic coffee tables. But first, let’s dive into what ceramic is and how it differs from marble.

What is Ceramic?

Ceramic is a manmade material that is produced using a combination of clay, earthen elements, powders and water and covered in a glaze that gives it the appearance of marble. However, unlike natural stones like marble, ceramic is much more affordable and has a non-porous surface, which makes it highly hygienic and durable. Marble, on the other hand, is porous, which means it needs to be regularly dusted and cleaned in order to keep it sanitary and free from bacteria. Ceramic is also much lighter in weight than pure marble, making it easier to move around should the need arise.

Cleaning:

When cleaning any ceramic products or pieces of furniture, remember that less is always more when it comes to this material. Because this material is so easy to keep clean, you can use the leftover time to make memories with your family without worrying about ruining your table or the clean-up.

A simple solution of mild detergent with water, along with a sponge or damp cloth is usually all it takes to remove any dirt, dust or caked-on food from the table. You may also make a solution of bicarbonate soda and water if you need to scrub something off. Whether it’s a recent stain or an old one, simple soap and water will do the trick and your table will still look as good as new! Set your kids free with their watercolours and colouring books and just wipe off the mess when they’re done!

Avoid using abrasive cleaning products, simply because they aren’t needed! Ceramic is much more durable than natural stones like marble, which means it is less prone to scratches and stains. There’s also no need to regularly polish your table, unlike wood tables which need to be regularly polished to keep them looking great.

Scratches:

Ceramic is a very hard material, and as mentioned above, is not prone to scratching. Whether you drag dishes across it or throw your keys down, or even chop food on top of it, it’s not going to make much of a difference to the surface of your table. Putting doilies and coasters on your gorgeous ceramic coffee table would be doing it a disservice, so you can keep the decor as little as possible and just let your table be the centrepiece of your living room.

Ceramic is also heat resistant, so putting hot dishes and cups on the surface will not harm your table or leave burn marks, unlike on wood.

Shine:

In order to preserve the shine of your ceramic table, use a limestone cleaning gel to wipe your table at least once or twice a year. This will take any residual grease or contaminants off the surface of your table, leaving it looking shiny and smooth and possibly increasing its longevity.

Moving the table:

While ceramic is much lighter than marble and can be easily moved from one place to another, it is advisable that when moving it, you do not drag the table or knock it against other pieces of furniture or the walls. This is because while ceramic is hardy and durable, it can chip when it knocks against a hard surface, and dragging the table may damage the integrity of the frames it is resting on.
