Our Story
The story of Gainsville started with George Gainsmith, a taxi driver in Melbourne. A cabinet maker by trade, George’s enterprising spirit and the responsibility of putting food on the table for his family gave him the idea of going door to door, purchasing second-hand TVs and other items that he could refurbish and sell for a profit. A salesman at heart, George became the origin of a little Australian family business that was destined to make a name for itself.
As the business grew, George went on to invest in a property on high street to house all the second hand televisions and articles that needed refurbishing or were ready to be sold. At this time, George’s son Warren started contributing to the business. Over the next 10 years, Warren gradually shifted the business from selling refurbished televisions and articles to crafting and selling locally-made furniture.
As the business gained its reputation, Warren and Gainsville gradually moved towards high-end designs to stand out in the market. Warren took to the European market for inspiration, and soon started manufacturing and selling stylish designer furniture in Melbourne, something that was well out of reach for Melbourne consumers earlier. Gainsville truly made its mark in the industry, showcasing at home shows, building a name for itself and truly evolving into something unique.
To keep up with demand, Gainsville expanded their business to shift their production to other parts of the world. Gainsville is now managed by siblings Andrea, Rick, and Mark Gainsmith, across three stores in Melbourne, the flagship at Southbank and the other two stores at Nunawading and Thomastown.
Gainsville is one of the leading designer furniture manufacturers and retailers in Melbourne currently. But we believe our journey has only just begun.
