The Kina light is inspired by the unique form of the sea urchin shell, called 'Kina' by the Māori people of New Zealand. During a journey to Antarctica in 2005, David observed a Kina shell frozen beneath the ice, where it had absorbed enough sunlight to gently melt the ice around it. This moment sparked the vision for the Kina design, crafted using the same mathematical principles as Coral and Floral. Using thin plywood and finely grained bamboo, David brought this vision to life, creating a light that echoes the beauty of nature through precise geometry.
Kina’s open structure not only enhances its visual appeal but also allows for direct illumination on surfaces, making it ideal for dining tables and gathering spaces. The woven pattern of softly rounded bamboo connections interweaves harmoniously, adding warmth and texture to any setting. With a variety of sizes available, Kina transitions effortlessly from small, cozy rooms to grand lobbies and foyers. Its versatile design complements both intimate and spacious interiors, providing a sense of organic elegance that brings nature indoors in a modern, refined way.
